In light of the global pandemic, WaterAid is expanding its foreign aid programmes to 30 countries. Access to clean water and sanitation have been proven to be effective measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus. What is more, in April, the World Health Organisation announced that coronavirus may still be present in unclean water, highlighting the urgent need for universal access to safe, clean water supplies.WaterAid is committed to combatting the virus, through increasing the distribution of WASH (Water, sanitation and hygiene) programmes worldwide. These include distributing handwashing stations in public spaces such as schools, clinics and community areas. Moreover, providing education to communities and healthcare workers in regards to hygiene is also vital to reduce transmissions and improve overall sanitation.Handwashing stations are vital to ensure people can carry out basic essential hygiene. This will also reduce the risk of contracting the virus from unclean water sources.WaterAid's aim is to achiever universal, equitable access to clean water and sanitation, a goal which will aid SDG 6 to reach its targets by 2030.
