How has the global pandemic affected WASH (Water, sanitation and hygiene) in Africa?

Clean Water and Sanitation

A webinar was held in May to discuss the impact on WASH, including Africa's response to rising water demands. During the discussion, it was highlighted that water is imperative to limit COVID-19 transmissions, reiterating the significance of following the WHO's (World Health Organisation) guidelines in terms of washing our hands frequently. Furthermore, it was noted that there had been an increase in water demands, with a contraction in industrial demands as a result of people working from home. A positive impact that the pandemic has triggered is a visible strengthening of global partnerships.

In Africa, for example, it has promoted talking between people, sharing information quicker than before, with South Africa’s Water Research Commission CEO recognising the advantages of the pandemic:

"If we look at COVID-19 in the right kind of way, we can use this crisis to accelerate the SDGs [sustainable development goals], and we can fit and make real the UN 2030 Agenda".
