Health officials in Ibiza have issued a warning following several cases of dengue fever on the island. Last year, six German tourists were infected with the virus between May and November. Concerns have been raised that there could be a further outbreak as the 2023 tourist season approaches. Symptoms of dengue fever include joint pain, fever and a rash. Dengue fever is spread by mosquitoes, with the Aedes albopictus mosquito being a potential carrier of the virus. While the risk of contracting the virus on the island is currently considered to be low, the Health and Emergencies Coordination Centre has classified the risk from May to November as moderate.
The Balearic Island health authorities have planned to carry out surveillance and vector control, as well as communication and public information, before and during the start of the vector activity season. Dengue fever is not typically a serious illness, and most people recover within a few days. However, in some cases, people may contract a more severe form of the disease. Symptoms of dengue fever can be similar to those of the flu, including headache, fever, and muscle and joint pain. While there is no specific treatment for dengue fever, symptoms can be relieved through rest, fluid intake and taking paracetamol to reduce fever and pain. Dengue fever is not present in the UK, and cannot be transmitted from person to person. Other European countries where dengue fever has been reported include France, Italy, Portugal, Croatia and Madeira.
