The number of Adenovirus cases is on the rise in West Bengal, resulting in a rapid increase in the number of patients admitted to pediatric units in hospitals. According to the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (ICMR-NICED) in Kolkata, at least 30% of samples collected since January have tested positive for the virus. To prevent the spread of the virus and treat those infected, health professionals have been advised to be vigilant for potential cases.
Adenovirus is a type of medium-sized, non-enveloped virus that can cause various illnesses, with the most common being the common cold or flu. Although infections can occur at any time, they are more common in the winter season. Individuals with compromised immune systems or pre-existing respiratory or heart disorders are at a higher risk of severe illness from an adenovirus infection.
There is currently no specific treatment for Adenovirus, and no approved vaccines or antiviral medications. However, over-the-counter pain relievers and symptom-relieving medications are available. The best way to prevent the illness is to avoid touching one's eyes, nose, and mouth, and to regularly sanitise hands and surroundings. Consultation with a medical professional is recommended for those experiencing symptoms.
