Category five cyclone Harold hit the Pacific Islands of Fiji, Tonga, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands on the 26th of April. Vanuatu was the worst-affected island by the cyclone, with severe destruction to homes, schools, hospitals and water supplies. Damaged water infrastructure has made it difficult to collect water, making access to safe drinking water limited. In response to this crisis, UNICEF has been working closely with the Department of Water Resources in Vanuatu, to ensure the most vulnerable communities are provided with clean water supplies. Additionally, UNICEF has provided families with basic sanitation and hygiene essentials such as soap and water buckets to ensure there is adequate sanitation to minimize the spread of disease.
