The community of Choi in Kongola has made a plead to the local authorities to fast-track the provision of clean water, as they struggle to carry out basic hygiene required to combat coronavirus. This situation has resulted in residents having to walk long distances in search of a water supply. Although the government had instructed local councils to provide water for free earlier this year, there is a clear ongoing issue which needs immediate action. When the community raised the water concern with the local council, they were reassured that the community would be connected to a solar-powered borehole from a local school. However, the infrastructure is ageing and this impacts the capacity for which the boreholes can pump water, which might not be enough to meet the needs of the people. With the looming threat of droughts, and the global pandemic sweeping the world, the need for clean water is more vital than ever.
