COVID-19 has affected every continent - except for Antarctica- highlighting both health and water crises. The global water crisis has been present for decades. However -with the global pandemic- demand for clean water has risen as there is an evident overlap between water and COVID-19.
Access to water is, of course, a necessity. However, access to clean water is crucial. One in three people today still lack access to safe drinking water, a crisis that has been present long before the pandemic. Water crises are not limited to one continent but affect countries globally. For example, in Flint, Michigan, lead-water contamination threatens residents' health, resulting in them being required to boil water before consuming it.
The global pandemic has only made matters worse, enhancing the need for clean water and sanitation, demanding immediate solutions.
Both long and short-term solutions are needed to combat both global water crises and global pandemic. These include making funds available for clean water and sanitation projects such as wastewater treatment and filtration plants, to deliver clean water and sanitation to communities.
