Al Qnaza'a Village has been suffering from food shortages, malnutrition and water scarcity for many years, with the ongoing conflict in Yemen making the matter worse. The risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera is high as there is no clean water supply. The main water supply for the community is open water wells, 9km away from the village. These water wells are often contaminated, increasing the risk of exposure to disease. The Building Foundation for Development (BFD) has begun working to improve WASH facilities in Al Qnaza'a village.
The BFD has helped 8,153 people through the installation of clean water networks that reach every household. Additionally, solar energy systems and water reservoirs have been constructed, improving access to clean water and sanitation.
As a result, villagers now have access to piped water, which has been a dream come true for many. Around 37 litres of water reaches every household daily, making access to clean water a reality. Since the BFD's intervention, cholera cases have dropped by 113 within a month.
It is successful interventions such as the one in Al Qnaza's village that will enable universal access to clean water and sanitation.
