China's core energy source is coal and the country is one of the biggest emitters of CO2 in the world, in order to manage the global carbon footprint, China needs to take serious measures. The China National Coal Association, or CNCA, has drafted a strategy to reduce China's coal consumption. The target is will allow space for cleaner energy to be developed as well as reducing coal consumption within 4.2 billion tonnes by 2025.
In 2019, coal consumption dropped slightly in China to 3.98 billion tonnes which were used throughout all the sectors including power generation, chemical industry, manufacturing, steelmaking, and others. In fact, use of coal in the power sector fell over half the total, 57.7% - according to the National Bureau of Statistics. However, the CNCA predicts that China's output of coal will increase between 2021 and 2025 by comparing what happened in 2019 when coal production grew by 4%.
After reading about the proposal, do you think China will not only achieve these targets but are they on track to meet SDG 12 by 2030?
