Brazil is looking to pass a law that would give property rights to squatters on public land. The reasoning is that by bringing properties into the legal system can they be forced to comply with Brazil’s laws that limit deforestation in the Amazon to 20% of private property. The bill would also allow for larger, and more recently settled properties to receive deeds. This proposal would mostly encourage deforestation, as it rewards land grabbers in the Amazon rainforest who occupy properties illegally and often clearing the land to use for agriculture.   During the administration of the current president Jair Bolsonaro, deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon has surged to a 12-year high in 2020. Large European retailers that use Brazil's agricultural commodity supply chain, are warning that they will no longer support or use these commodities if the bill is passed as it risks even more damage to Amazon. Either because of a commitment to SDG12 for responsible consumption or production, or just because it’s the right thing to do, how else do you think the private sector should encourage nations and people to protect the environment?
