Project Lampung: Estee Lauder's Palm Oil Initiative

Responsible Consumption and Production

One of the biggest companies in the beauty industry announced its first step of becoming sustainable in 2019. Project Lampurg consisted of companies within the industry; Clinique, MAC, Smashbox, and Jo Malone London that were committed to improving the social conditions of farmers of palm oil in Indonesia along with developing environmental conservation in order to ensure that palm oil is being responsibly produced. The aim of this initiative is to reduce the environmental implications that result from the production of palm oil, along with training Indonesian farmers sustainable agricultural methods, with long-term support. This project aims to prevent the degradation of soil, minimising the excess use of water and chemicals. The hope is to reach 1,000 local Indonesian farmers throughout the term of the project, by 2021. Estee Lauder encourages others in the industry to reflect on their consumption of palm oil, and despite their own being "relatively small", they have decided to lead by example by participating and being environmentally conscious.
