A study has found that only 2% of government dietary guidelines follow current science on the basis of both health and impact on the environment. What does this mean? 98% of the world's government dietary guideline needs to be re-examined. Our consumption patterns have an extreme impact on the environment, including climate change and our ceasing freshwater supply. These guidelines have to contribute to lowering carbon emissions, ensuring that the environment is maintained rather than destroyed. Also, there are global warning limits set by the Paris Climate Agreement that governments from 74 countries failed to adhere to."Without dietary changes towards more plant-based diets, key environmental limits relate to climate change, land use, freshwater extraction, and biogeochemical flows associated with fertilizer application risk being exceeded", Lead researcher Dr Marco Springmann, University of Oxford.
