80% of the population in Latin America live in urban areas, it is one of the highest rates of urbanisation in the world. As a result, it is predicted that by 2050, the urban population will increase to 90%.
The waste management crisis in Latin America is filled by rapid urbanisation, they face challenges in keeping up with cleaning up and disposing of effectively. The inefficiency is caused by the lack of infrastructure and services for these urban populations to correctly respond to disposing of consumer items.
However, some cities in the continent are responding by integrating their workers from the recycling sector into the municipal solid waste management system. This job means that costs for transportation of waste are reduced, along with the increase in landfill lifetimes as well as supporting recycling chains throughout the region.
