Oscar Mendez is a Colombian architect who adopted the idea of building homes from discarded plastics. Blocks of plastics that aren’t recycled or processed end up being building materials for families in Colombia. The initiative is called Concept Plastics, after Fernando Llanos first came up with the idea and Mendez came up with developing bricks after several years of research.Mendez says “This is an initiative of triple impacts: economic impact, environmental impact, and social impact. It is expected that with this new strategy of building, that Colombia may downsize contamination that is caused by thrown-away, discarded plastics. Not only does it reduce plastics that end up in landfill sites, but it also benefits thousands of homeless people in Colombia.
