UK universities at the greatest financial risk in Europe

Valentina Quality Education

The effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on education are widely discussed. For higher education institutions, the biggest threat is the reduced number of foreign students and the financial consequences of that. Research by U-Multirank has claimed that universities in the UK will face the biggest reductions in income from all higher education institutions in Europe. On average,  UK institutions could drop by 14% as a result of a potential decline in international fee-paying international students, and in Europe as a whole, the reduction is expected to be by 5.2%. However, there are four countries in Europe that are particularly vulnerable to a reduced amount of foreign student enrolments. Namely, institutions in the UK (54%), Latvia (38%), Ireland (35%) and Bulgaria (35%) all have “relatively high” dependence on fees.
