Although over the years progress has been made to achieve universal access to water and sanitation, today, one in three people still lack access to safe drinking water. Moreover, 673 million people continue to practice open defecation due to no access to adequate toilet facilities.2020 has been a year like no other. The global pandemic has highlighted the need and importance of safe access to clean water and sanitation, as these are key preventative measures to combat the virus. Ensuring there is affordable, equitable and adequate access to water and sanitation is vital to improve well-being, reduce the risk of disease, and promote development. Additionally, SDG 6 focuses on the long-term sustainable management and consumption of the world's water supplies, which includes water-related ecosystems which must be protected and restored. We must work together towards meeting every single one of the targets that make up SDG 6. This will not only help mitigate the effects of a future water crisis, but will ensure we conserve and protect the world's water supplies, whilst improving global well-being.
