COVID-19 has exposed the importance of being able to access clean water and sanitation, as one of the fundamental measures in preventing transmissions. Nonetheless, Ethiopia has struggled to fight and prevent the spread of COVID-19 due to lack of access to clean water.
Although 65% of Ethiopian households have improved access to water supplies, between 60-80% of communicable diseases are caused by lack of clean water, hygiene and sanitation. The negative repercussions that can emerge -from not being able to obtain clean water and adequate sanitation- are not limited to waterborne diseases, but can also hinder a person's education and future opportunities.
To combat these challenges, MoWIE (Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy) has been working closely with local and international partners to improve and extend water access, through constructing handwashing stations and delivering water to neighbourhoods.
Securing a continuous reliable water supply is vital to guarantee water needs are met and managed sustainably, preparing for future shocks through increased resilience.
