Boat village in Lake Manchar struggles to access clean water

Clean Water and Sanitation

The known 'boat village' is located in one of Asia's largest lakes, the lake Manchar, located in Pakistan. This lake is home to 450 people who live in boats. However, over the last three decades, the population has severely decreased from 50,000 to just 450. Fishing is the main source of income for the residents of boat village, yet with increased waste dumping into the lake, fish stocks have decreased as a result of a drop in water levels due to reduced rainfall from climate change. Moreover, industrial dumping has contributed to the struggles faced by many residents as they are unable to source water from the lake due to high levels of pollutants. These have been some of the factors that have contributed to mass migration, as lack of income and increased prevalence of waterborne disease threaten the residents. SDG 6, aims to achieve global access to clean water and sanitation, however, it is also focused on protecting and replenishing water-related ecosystems such as lakes and rivers.
