Swiss city Lausanne opened new art centre the size of five football fields

GNB Arts and Culture

The Swiss city of Lausanne has just opened Plateforme 10 on 18 June, a new arts centre aimed to revitalise the area through culture and become a new “arts district.”

Plateforme 10 located in a former car repair factory near the station. It is the equivalent of 5 football fields, spanning about 25,000 square metres.

Three museums are included in the district: the Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts (MCBA), the Museum of Contemporary Design and Applied Arts (mudac), and Photo Elysee, the Cantonal Museum of Photography.

Platforme 10 aims to be a real Lausanne neighbourhood, boasting restaurants, terraces, bookshops, gift shops and arcades.

Patrick Gyer, Plateforme 10’s managing director, told Artnet News that “the MCBA was in a former palace and the other two were in mansions, none of which was predisposed to museum activity…the idea was to unite the three museums on the same site.”

The new building cost $207.2 million. Plateforme 10 hopes to include performing studios over the next few years, to diversify its programming.
