The Asian Development Bank has proposed ways of managing solid waste, the five methods of improvement will encourage cities to take action to meet the SDG 12 targets.
1. One reason for poor solid waste management in Asian cities is due to insufficient budget.
2. Waste collection and the efficiency of the process needs to be improved. Communities in the Philippines and Thailand are encouraged to reduce, reuse, and recycle their waste.
3. Many of the landfills in Asia are inefficient and poorly operated, in order to be improved, landfills need to be redesigned to a sustainable standard for the environment as well as being economically achievable.
4. The ADB believes that a PPP model could encourage wide adoption of waste management practices. Other cities will be influenced after observing success elsewhere.
5. Raising awareness for the issue at hand is vital to help sustain the purpose of these changes. Some places in Asia, such as Mandalay in Burma, incorporate waste management and recycling in schools as a way of educating the younger generation and perhaps teaching their parents.
