Plastic waste mismanagement creates tension between Honduras and Guatemala

Responsible Consumption and Production

Problems that Honduras has been facing since 2009 include plastic pollution and waste mismanagement. The garbage that ends up collecting by the coasts is usually from Guatemala and this is affecting the livelihoods of Honduran fishermen. Garbage that covers the sandy beaches of Honduras is made up of plastics, medical waste, toys, and even diapers. Fishermen are finding difficulties in meeting demands as plastic pollution has created a reduction in fish, which endangers their way of life. Not only has it affected fishermen but also businesses that usually have flocks of tourists and residents who enjoy the beach restaurants. However, since the garbage continues to pile up, fewer people visit. Many of the items found washed up on the beaches say 'Made in Guatemala' which gives a clue that the rubbish is being moved around from there.
