New Yorker collects and re-vamps clothes to tackle fast fashion waste

New Yorker Makayla Wray has a mobile tailor shop, she parks it in the centre of the Soho area and offers to repair clothes; it might need a button, it may have a rip, she'll fix it. She has saved lots of pieces of clothes for the public, she collects fabrics and makes her own pieces of clothing or re-uses it for other things like making teddy bears.Outside of this, she works as a seamstress and her apartment becomes a warehouse for fabrics and materials on the weekends. Makayla does her best to do her part in reducing the waste caused by fast fashion, she doesn't agree with fashion being a seasonal use but instead something that can be worn and mended, sold or donated. Large manufacturers struggle with reducing their waste but Makayla firmly believes that consumers have a huge role to play, not only in the high levels of consumption of fast fashion but also in the direct results of throw-away societal behaviour, which land millions of pieces of clothing into landfill.
