Zimbabwe teachers are refusing to start teaching this academic year, due to low pays, lack of sanitation and safety measures according to the ongoing pandemic. Schools in Zimbabwe reopened at the end of September 2020, particularly for pupils due to sit exams in early December – six months after they were closed because of a rise in COVID-19 cases in the country. However, teachers say the government is ill-prepared to deal with a possible outbreak of the virus in schools. According to them, only a limited amount of hand sanitizer has been made available to schools and water shortages make handwashing impossible. According to the Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ), 98% of teachers did not report for work last week across the country.
