Robbed of education

Arya Quality Education

World refugee day was celebrated this year amid a surge in anti-racism movements around the globe. However, humanitarian response to the refugee crisis is still greatly influenced by geopolitics, racism and xenophobia which has been exploited in Lebanon for financial gain. Agreements between international donors and Lebanese politicians on schooling for Syrian refugees and children have compromised Syrian education opportunities. European countries are also allegedly willing to cover costs of the Syrian education programme in Lebanon, in a move to prevent refugees entering Europe. This comes as a result of xenophobia and racism. For example, David Cameroon, upon his visit to Beirut states “One out of every 50 people who came to Europe was a member of ISIS”.Analysis of the programme finds that only 50% of Syrian children are out of education, while 1% are in grade 9 and less than 4% make it to secondary education.
