New Zealand experiences the drawbacks to child-centred learning

Arya Quality Education

The New Zealand Initiative says Kiwi kids’ declining success in literacy and maths is down to the flawed philosophy of child-centred learning, putting the child at the centre of decision making about school. However, in recent times, this philosophy has proved problematic for the quality of education students in New Zealand are receiving. Now children have far too much freedom in their classes. In order to combat the decrease of quality education as a result of this education policy, the New Zealand Initiative wants “mandatory standardised national assessments”, and charter schools brought back. Bringing back a focus on disciplinary knowledge. This has come as the Ministry of Education noted a dip in the international rankings. Now, they are listening and working with New Zealand teachers and leaders around what they need to produce the best outcomes for their students.
