Loss of hope, potential and opportunity: Education in West Africa is under threat

Arya Quality Education

Currently, over 2 million children in West Africa are being robbed of education due to violence and insecurity around their schools. Countries are facing threats and attacks not only on students but staff and parents too, making schools a very unsafe environment.

In 2018 alone, a quarter of the 742 verified attacks on schools globally took place in West and Central Africa. This, in turn, has caused schools to close down, as of June 2019, 9,272 schools shut across eight regions, affecting over 1.91 million children and 44,000 teachers in West Africa.

Threats of attacks from Islamist militants hinders development and increases poverty and inequality in the country. This a current reality. Lack of education will also place children at greater risk of joining dangerous armed groups. And so without education, West Africa loses lots of home, potential, and opportunity.
