Germany's lengthy pandemic school closures hit migrant pupils hardest

Cara Quality Education

Migrant children in Germany who rely on school to learn the German language are being hit hardest by the closure of schools throughout the pandemic.

Germanys initiative to integrate over 2 million people seeking asylum mainly from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan means that it is crucial that the education gap is addressed. Over 50% of migrant children do not speak German at home. Therefore, contact with natives is critical to learn the language, the pandemic impacted this integration through lack of contact. Migrant parents often lack academic and German language skills and thus cannot support their children with online learning. This has further amplified educational inequalities between migrants and natives.
