Alaso Olivia and Sharon Nyanjura began sharing experiences working as social workers and at an NGO in Uganda. They noticed a double standard compared to white people in the industry and tagged each post #NoWhiteSaviours. Now the Instagram account @NoWhiteSavours has over 690,000 followers, helping women raise money to build a library in Uganda dedicated to Black and Ugandan literature. This is in the hope to open our minds to the marginalised voices from the Global South.
The whole point of the page was to advocate for a better understanding of development in African communities. In August 2020 they organised a month-long online campaign, #DecoloniseYourMind, addressing topics ranging from tribalism to African literature and European colonialism.
