The basic education system in South Africa is steeped in a history of systemic inequality that was institutionalised by the apartheid government. This would create a divide in the type and quality of education received between white and black learners in the country.
26 years after the first democratic election, the remnants of apartheid still continues, exacerbating inequality and quality education for all learners of all backgrounds. It has also created another generation of young people who will struggle to secure employment and who are unable to access tertiary education.
