A storm in the education system

Arya Quality Education

As of September, public K-12 education employment in the US is more than half a million jobs below its year-ago levels. The pandemic has led to an ongoing nationwide shortage of qualified teachers, creating a storm in the education system that may only worsen in coming months. Educators such as Cynthia Robles are feeling the effects of this first hand. Robles describes working in school and doing online teaching too, while simultaneously helping to cover other classes during her unassigned periods to make up for the lack of substitute teachers in the district. She explains how the district is short of some 100 teachers and could use an additional 100 to fill substitute needs. Amidst this, educators are being forced to make tough decisions about their own health and safety, simply by just going to work. According to data from the American Federation of Teachers, the national labour union shows 1 in 3 teachers say the pandemic has made them more likely to retire earlier than planned.
