The #TippyTapChallenge -initiated by UNICEF South Africa- has improved hand hygiene for many in South Africa, where 2 million households do not have access to handwashing facilities. The challenge consists in building your own tippy tap, a water-saving, efficient handwashing tool that only requires a container, a soap bar, string, a nail and wooden sticks. The easy to assemble handwashing station has improved and promoted handwashing, whilst empowering young people to learn about building handwashing stations.Handwashing is a key preventative measure to reduce the spread of COVID-19. By building tippy taps, people can wash their hands, reducing the risk of contracting the virus amongst other diseases. It is with these initiatives that we can ensure there is universal access to clean water and sanitation, whilst contributing to educating people on the importance of hand hygiene.
