South Africa has been experiencing a water crisis following water shortages, particularly in Johannesburg, which could result in the
country's water supplies being depleted by 2030 if no action to conserve water is taken.Johannesburg imports water from Lesotho, whilst also getting its water from the Vaal dam, with the Katse dam being the main supply. At the moment, the Katse dam is sitting at a capacity of 20.9%. The concept Day Zero was introduced at the beginning of 2018, following a drop in the dam's full capacity to 15%. The idea behind this day is that it will be the time when water runs out.
The government is currently planning to build a new dam in
Lesotho, although construction plans are going slow. However, the situation is
hard, with climate change increasing the occurrence of droughts, and
Johannesburg geographical location making it difficult to access water, more
measures need to be in place.
