In the rural town of Baoyi, almost 500 people have fallen sick after consuming contaminated water, triggering diarrhoea amongst other symptoms. With around 300 people having been hospitalized, the decision was taken to shut down the town's water supply. Although 256 million people in rural regions in China had received improved access to clean water in July, yet there are still concerns over the quality of drinking water across the country, with even the wealthiest people having to boil water before consuming it in some cases. Improving water quality and reducing pollutants found in water supplies are targets that makeup SDG 6, working towards them will prevent events such as this one from occurring again.
