Climate change is likely to create food and water shortages soon, causing mass migration to take place, as countries are unable to cope and respond to shortages. As a result, 1.2 billion people could be displaced by 2050 due to water and food shortages as well as extreme weather conditions, including flooding and drought. This comes following research carried out by the Institue of Economics and Peace (IEP), which has warned that environmental crises could cause mass migration from 31 countries. Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, are the regions currently under threat from facing environmental crises, such as water shortages. Moreover, 19 of these 31 countries, are also amongst the world's most unstable, which in the case of an environmental crisis, could cause further instability.Global cooperation is vital, to minimise the negative impacts that climate change and future environmental crisis-including water shortages from drought- will have worldwide. Furthermore, with water and food shortages being the key drivers of instability, more must be done to avoid future migration crises, but the action is required now.
