Smoke from the fires has already covered the entire West Coast of the USA, before spreading west out over the Pacific Ocean. This week the smoke has traveled east, affecting skies from New York to Washington D.C., and reaching as far as the skies above Britain.
Smoke can hurt the eyes, irritate respiratory systems, and worsen chronic heart and lung diseases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It can make healthy people sick if there is enough in the air.
